The Story of Happy Body Salve

Sometimes, things are supposed to come about.  Through seemingly random happenstance, opportunity knocks.

Happy Body salve is a bone, joint, muscle and nerve pain salve that got its start when a neighbor hobbled over to the house, her hips obviously in pain, as her persistent beagle pup pulled with the determination only a beagle can express. She walked like a kinked up question mark.

She saw me out on my deck, cocked her head at me and declared, "You're into plants.  Can you make a salve for pain relief?"  That was the million dollar question I'll never forget.  I'd actually never considered what she was asking before.

"I don't know, but I am happy to try!  I could use it too!" Curious about the idea,  I donned my old journalism research hat, and dove into seeing what I could find out.  I found several sources that agreed on the individual properties of some herbs that all had proven abilities in and of themselves.  Then, I extracted them into olive and sunflower oil, strained out the herbs, added hemp seed oil, shea and cocoa butters, and beeswax, melting all of it together.  The process took a few days.  I poured the finished salve up into 6 oz jelly jars, and took one over to my neighbor.

Two weeks went by.  I didn't see hide nor hair of her.  I began to worry a little, hoping the affect on her was a good one.
.
Meanwhile, I was also using the salve.  I found that it gave me more ability to flex my titanium twin plated bionic ankle.  It seemed that there was more fluidity, less wonkyness to my movements.  My ankle bones didn't grind each other so much, they had a cushion somehow.  It didn't hurt as much after I walked a little too far with the cane.  It stopped throbbing within a few minutes of putting on the salve.  I used it several times a day, because I was still in a lot of pain every day.  After two weeks, I was able to throw the cane completely away and go foraging outside the first time in nearly two years of learning to walk again.

The next day, October 12, 2015, My neighbor knocked at my door.  "I have the greatest news!" she declared.  "I've gotten off the opiates, fired the physical therapist, and gone back to my waitressing job!" And then she let the good news drop.  "HOW can I help you SELL that salve??"

Well I'll be.  We'd both had truly amazing results, it was astounding.

After she fairly skipped out the door, I looked at the calendar.  It shocked me to realize, that day was my two year "fall-down-go-boomavirsary."

Two years prior, laying in the hospital bed after surgery, the lady whose home I fell at had sent her son to the hospital with dried comfrey, to show me how to make a poultice out of it.  She had sent me an email, emphatically telling me, "You were chosen for this."  I rejected this wisdom the entire time I was healing.  Wanting to think that it was just a freak accident, because my angels couldn't be that cruel. This couldn't have been planned, for a higher purpose, could it?

After my very happy neighbor came over with her fantastic news, I looked at the calendar, and the persistent message came to mind again.    "YOU WERE CHOSEN FOR THIS."

At that moment, I opened my arms up to the heavens and said, "OK!  I receive that now.  Show me what to do with it."   Now what??  That holiday season, I sold lots of salve alongside my partner at holiday craft shows.  I'd hand out q-tip coated samples of it to people interested in trying it out. It was so rewarding to watch people's expressions change from jaded to surprised as the salve began working for them within two minutes.  They'd barely get round the market before hurrying back to my booth to buy it.  It was amazing to see how well it worked for complete strangers, who didn't have to be nice about it.

The next spring, I was selling salve at my local farmer's market, and the occasional craft fair.  I also started putting herbal teas together, and sold those too.  By 2017, joined a year round farmer's market, and sales kept climbing.   The personal experience of glowing customer feedback means something to me each time someone said something like, "I've tried everything.  Nothing works for me."  It was fun to call their bluff, hand them a sample, and watch disbelief disappear from their faces in a few minutes.

Happy Body Salve is made with Comfrey, Lemon Balm, and Solomon's Seal as the Power Team herbs of the blend.  Comfrey is a bone, joint, and muscle healer as well as as a pain reliever.  It melts on contact, and  immediately starts working to reduce inflammation so the joint can move better.  Lemon Balm is an herbal nervine.  It smooths out the messages pain running amok in the nerves, and, over time, heals frayed nerve endings, a super important thing, because it takes two years to grow a new nerve.  Solomon's Seal supports healthy healing in ligaments and tendons, which I learned personally over about six months time.   So it's been added to the formula.   The other herbs in the blend are lemongrass, rosemary, lemon rose geranium, and eucalyptus.  These herbs support the pain relievers as anti-bacterials anti-fungals and mild pain relievers.  Hemp Seed oil softens skin, provides Omega 6 and Omega 3's and turns the salve a pleasant light green color.  People rave about the uplifting, lemony fragrance of the salve.  Nobody runs away screaming because it doesn't knock you down with a strong smell like it's more suited to cleaning floors with.
